This chapter deals with the State aid rules applicable to financial services. It begins with a historical account of the situation regarding State aid rules in this sector before, during and after the financial crisis, and provides an outline of the Crisis Framework and Banking Union mechanisms. After a discussion of specific issues regarding the existence and quantification of support for financial services undertakings, the chapter deals with the compatibility of crisis aid under the Crisis Framework Communications and Banking Union legislation. The chapter concludes with a discussion of specific procedural issues arising in relation to financial services aid, including the use of monitoring and divestiture trustees and the implementation of restructuring commitments.
